DOL Releases AI & Inclusive Hiring Framework to Guide Employers in Fair AI Use

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has published the AI & Inclusive Hiring Framework to assist employers in using artificial intelligence (AI) for recruitment in a way that promotes inclusivity and avoids unintentional bias, particularly against disabled job seekers. This framework, developed in partnership with the Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT), provides detailed guidance on how to implement AI ethically and in compliance with anti-discrimination laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

The framework is based on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework and includes the following 10 key focus areas:

  1. Identify legal requirements
  2. Establish staff roles
  3. Inventory technology
  4. Work with vendors
  5. Assess impacts
  6. Provide accommodations
  7. Use explainable AI
  8. Ensure human oversight
  9. Manage incidents
  10. Monitor regularly

This framework aims to mitigate the risks of bias and discrimination that could arise from the use of AI in hiring processes, ensuring that these technologies enhance diversity and inclusion. Employers are encouraged to integrate these practices to promote fair and accessible hiring for all applicants.
