Chicago Delays Effective Date of its Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance

The City of Chicago has delayed the effective date of its Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance from December 31, 2023 to July 1, 2024. The amended ordinance also changes the definition of a “covered employee” under the law. Previously, a covered employee was one who, in any particular two-week period, performed at least two hours of work for an employer while physically present within the geographic boundaries of the City. Now, a covered employee is one who works at least 80 hours for an employer within any 120-day period while physically present within the geographic boundaries of the City. Once the threshold is reached, the employee will remain a covered employee for the remainder of the time that they work for the employer.
