Maine has passed Senate Bill 179, which increases enforcement and accountability for wage and hour violations. Prior to the amendment, employers or other individuals responsible for any wage violations could only be fined up to $1,000 per violation. However, the new legislation adds that those in violation can also be ordered to pay all unpaid wages owed to an employee, as well as an additional fine of double that amount as liquidated damages and a a reasonable rate of interest.
The increased penalties are effective July 16, 2024.
