Noncompete Agreements Illegal Under New California Law

new California law both (1) emphasizes that noncompete agreements and clauses are generally void under current state law, and (2) makes noncompetes not only void, but illegal under state law. The law further requires employers to notify current or former employees employed after January 1, 2022, whose contracts include a noncompete agreement or clause, that the agreement or clause is void.

The law is effective January 1, 2024. The notice to current or former employees must occur by February 14, 2024.
