The newly finalized OSHA “walkaround” rule states that employees have the right to select a representative, who could be an internal or external person, to join an OSHA compliance officer during workplace inspections. This includes external representatives, like union members, if they possess relevant expertise or skills beneficial for a comprehensive inspection. The rule aims to enhance inspection efficacy through such knowledgeable accompaniment, adhering to the Occupational Safety & Health Act’s guidelines without imposing additional burdens on employers.
Implementation is scheduled for May 31, 2024.
