The City of Chicago has passed a new ordinance requiring employers to provide employees 10 days of paid time off per year — five sick days and five vacation days. The ordinance also requires companies with 100 or more workers to pay out up to seven days of unused time when employees leave their jobs. For employers with 51 to 100 employees, there is a two-year phase-in period to pay out departing workers for unused time. Employers with 50 or fewer employees are exempt from the payouts to departing workers.
The ordinance becomes effective on December 31, 2023.
