Alaska: Alaska’s minimum wage will increase from $11.73 to $11.91 effective January 1st, 2025. This change also affects salaried employees who are exempt from overtime requirements under Alaska Statute 23.10.055(b). The minimum salary for these workers will increase from $938.40 /week or $48,796.80 per year in 2024, to $952.80 per week or $49,545.60 per year.
California: The change in the minimum wage from $16.00 to $16.50 on January 1st, 2025, also affects the minimum salary an employee must earn to meet one part of the overtime exemption test. Exempt employees are not subject to the payment of overtime for hours worked. An employee must earn no less than two times the state’s minimum wage for full-time work to meet this initial requirement of the exemption test. As of January 1, 2025, employees in California must earn an annual salary of no less than $68,640 to meet this threshold requirement.
Colorado: Pursuant to the state’s 2025 PAY CALC Order, the salary threshold under state law will increase to $1,086.25 per week on January 1, 2025. (For computer employees paid by the hour, the new rate is $34.07 per hour.)
Maine: In September, the Maine Department of Labor shared that it would adopt the new U.S. Department of Labor rule increasing the minimum salary threshold for exempting a worker from overtime pay to $58,656 per year in 2025. However, the Maine DOL has clarified that because the federal increase was recently blocked by court action, starting January 1, 2025 the new minimum salary threshold in Maine will be $845.21 per week, or $43,951 per year (i.e., 3,000 times the state’s minimum wage). New York: Each time the New York State minimum wage increases, the state’s minimum salary required for executive and administrative employees will increase proportionately. On January 1, 2025, the state minimum weekly salary for administrative and executive employees will range from $1,161.65 per week for employees in New York State, to $1,237.50 per week for employees who work in Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester counties and in New York City for any size employer and Fast Food Establishments.
Washington: The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries has developed a Salary Threshold Implementation Schedule, which shows salary thresholds through 2028. (Effective January 1, 2025, exempt computer professionals paid at an hourly rate must be paid at least $58.31 per hour in order to be exempt.)
