As you know, beginning in January 2028, Maryland will implement a paid family and medical leave program designed to support workers needing time off to care for themselves or a family member. Eligible employees will receive job protection and financial support of up to $1,000 per week for a maximum of 12 weeks.
Recently, the Maryland Department of Labor issued proposed regulations that provide further details about the program. These include definitions, a list of template forms to be developed for use, and rules for employers who choose to participate through private insurance plans as an alternative to the state-administered option. The proposed regulations are subject to a 30-day public comment period following their publication.
