Maryland Passes “Earned Wage Access” Law

Maryland has passed an earned wage access law, allowing employees to access their earned wages before their scheduled payday. You can access a letter written by Governor Wes Moore explaining his decision to allow the law to go into effect.

The law covers both “employer-integrated” wage access and “consumer-directed” wage access. Providers must be licensed, offer a no-cost option for accessing wages, and adhere to various consumer protection measures such as fee limitations and a prohibition on charging interest.

The law is effective October 1, 2025.
